11/29/25 - Woods bounce-offs and parallels

After her strong interest to go into vs away from woods last class day, I asked Mary Ann to lay a track that parallels woods and does bounce-offs from woods. Mary Ann nailed the assignment (and shout out to Kelley who co-laid and was MVP for double lineups!). We ran the track at 1hr 15min old. Notes - what went well: Great start and 1st turn on the rails! Her article indications were really nice today.  I think our slowed down routine at articles is slowing her down and keeping energy / excitement from running wild. She feels more measured at restarts now. Turns - She was really clear to read on all with the exception of the last turn. In reviewing video, she gave a head turn at the final turn before going forward a little and then looking at woods.  Line work was good today - getting back up the line quickly + a behind the back line work on the final turn - felt like I supported her well when she committed.  She drank well before start and at articles Notes - To work on:...

1/1/2025 - Endurance track

Goal: Endurance track of 700+ yds with low age

Track: 720 yds run at ~1hr w field and woods plus some crossing across gravel path and cement track. Articles in woods were Baited.

Pattern: S5W50F25 in field, S5W20F10 in woods. Scuffed in and out of turns as focus was endurance

Weather: ~55* w W 15 mph wind gusts,  sunny

Overall, she did really well.  I could almost hear her laughing in her head at the start because the track age was so much lower than we've been working. She HAULED me the first half but slowed in woods.  She was having fun which was a goal for today.

She downed at all articles and followed track in woods very closely - I was able to reach all of my clips! Nice woods entries and exits.  The suspended log tripped her up in the woods as it wasn't quite low enough to go under but she moved around and found a better way and continued. Very little crittering on legs paralleling and inside of woods today. I offered water at several articles and she needed some.  She was definitely getting a bit tired towards the end but was happy to work today. She was a little stubborn to down on the last article but I waited it out - not sure if the light pole was throwing her off. It's been a while since we did anything over 400 yds so this was a nice, easy but long track for today.

  1. nice job, you are reading her well, i think you could give up the chatter/comments to her, she doesn't need them. on the downed tree jump over/climb under - do work a couple of options for getting by something like that. for both of you! your line tension is nice. i think the slow down on the last article was poor article placement. most dogs and coyotes are going to mark anything upright so my bet is it was a bit of putting. i get why you don't want it out in the middle where someone could pick it up but think about a different spot next time. i like the notes that you have put on these articles about leaving them for the tracking dog. and nice watering!

  2. Haven’t watched the video yet…my first thought is easy???? 10 turns, 5++obstacles!! People, bikes…..short dry grass…..Now, that said, you made GREAT use of the space you had—I just want to make sure you appreciate that was a very hard track!
I agree with MAM—I don’t think she needs the chatter! The bad thing about chatter is that when we DONT know where the track is, and the dog isn’t clear…we tend to shut up. Which sounds very different to them than how we sound when we DO know where the track is. So it starts to function as a ‘keep going’ cue, which we don’t want.

All that aside, she looks great! It always makes me smile when something simple, like a log, stymies them🤷🏼‍♀️. But after they figure it out they are SO proud of themselves! Her articles are beautiful, as is her drinking. She so clearly loves the job, and your relationship is just lovely.
