11/29/25 - Woods bounce-offs and parallels

After her strong interest to go into vs away from woods last class day, I asked Mary Ann to lay a track that parallels woods and does bounce-offs from woods. Mary Ann nailed the assignment (and shout out to Kelley who co-laid and was MVP for double lineups!). We ran the track at 1hr 15min old. Notes - what went well: Great start and 1st turn on the rails! Her article indications were really nice today.  I think our slowed down routine at articles is slowing her down and keeping energy / excitement from running wild. She feels more measured at restarts now. Turns - She was really clear to read on all with the exception of the last turn. In reviewing video, she gave a head turn at the final turn before going forward a little and then looking at woods.  Line work was good today - getting back up the line quickly + a behind the back line work on the final turn - felt like I supported her well when she committed.  She drank well before start and at articles Notes - To work on:...

Nov 25 - Tucker Park

Temp: 53*, overcast w still winds and drizzly, following overnight rain

Field: short dead grass, damp ground

Tracklayer: me, tracks run @ ~20”

Plan: Redo yesterday’s plan at different field. First time out in wet conditions. Unit = S10W5F3.

  • T1: 4 units
  • T2: 6 units
  • T3: 8 units
  • T4: 10 units
She did really well today and we started out with a longer “warmup” T1 since she was still a bit tuckered out from activities yesterday and could focus better. Starts were great and as soon as I clip her on the harness, her nose darts to the ground and starts work. I continued to assist downs at articles but am starting to notice a bit more recognition on her part. While we were running tracks, there were definitely hunters firing nearby and she would stop work to look around and investigate calmly but would go back to work after a beat.

I noticed she worked slower today and observed a new behavior today: she casts more on shuffled places and then right on the front edge of walk legs, she’d “focus” more. Could be a “oh hey, there’s less scent, let me look closer/harder” or “ hmmm, this is the area where the cheese usually is, better pay attention.” (Likely a bit of both!) Then when we’d get back to shuffle areas, she’d plod around again - moving forward but a bit more casual/ nonchalant.  Near the end of T4, we intersected with a tree from our double up, so I laid the track with a ~10* angle detour. She came to the angle and took a step or two straight, then cast and found the track and held tight! Garmin watch read T4 at 425 feet length, no issues at all with distance.

  1. From the side she looks like an anteater! Let’s drop your scuff to 5 scuff steps, and leave the walk where it is for now. Let me know if that keeps her nose down better! She looks fantastic!
