11/29/25 - Woods bounce-offs and parallels

After her strong interest to go into vs away from woods last class day, I asked Mary Ann to lay a track that parallels woods and does bounce-offs from woods. Mary Ann nailed the assignment (and shout out to Kelley who co-laid and was MVP for double lineups!). We ran the track at 1hr 15min old. Notes - what went well: Great start and 1st turn on the rails! Her article indications were really nice today.  I think our slowed down routine at articles is slowing her down and keeping energy / excitement from running wild. She feels more measured at restarts now. Turns - She was really clear to read on all with the exception of the last turn. In reviewing video, she gave a head turn at the final turn before going forward a little and then looking at woods.  Line work was good today - getting back up the line quickly + a behind the back line work on the final turn - felt like I supported her well when she committed.  She drank well before start and at articles Notes - To work on:...

Week 2 - Oct 31 (Class Day)

Evie's first day out on the job. The task today was 3 straight tracks separated by 5 big walks with article (tennis ball at end).

Terrain/Weather:

  • Judi's field, tall grass, uphill to flat
  • Tracks laid W to E
  • Winds S 2 mph (per watch)
  • 52* and moderate humidity
Tracks laid ~8:30am with cheese, aged 5-10 min
  • T1: S15F2
  • T2: S20F2
  • T3: S25F2
Evie was there to WORK! Her last time out was in April at the seminar when she was a 4 month unfocused ball of GSP energy (but she calmed on the track and worked then). After retrieving her out of the car, her nose went down at the trail and she was pulling hard to the field. I forgot to put a treat at the start (thanks for the assist Judi!) on T1 and T2 but as soon as her nose hit, she was doing her "full body" sniffs and followed the tracks moderately well. The 3rd track she was maybe most focused on. She had great drive and was confident in her line with some casting off but she would quickly get back on the track.

Each time she got to the treat pot on the tennis ball (article) and didn't give a hoot about the tennis ball. I'm not sure I've ever seen her ignore one - she just wanted to keep tracking so we moved on each time after some praise. I figured my ball-obsessed pup would want to pick up the tennis ball and play, but she had other plans so we'll move to more normal articles with food in them going forward and work on downing at the article. 

Too much fun today - looking forward to this week's practice.
